Business is booming for the Northeast Structural Steelwork firm with many projects currently in the pipeline.
SCH is currently working on 7 local projects in the North East at the moment, within a variety of sectors, to provide the local area with new units for growth. 3 of the projects will be mentioned below are close to SCH’s roots.
‘Greta’ and ‘Skerne’ - Mandale Business Park

The first of SCH’s projects is located in the bustling city of Durham, named ‘Greta and Skerne’. These 2 retail units are 200 tonnes with a predicted time frame of 5 weeks on site. Both units are retail for ‘Mandale Business’ to grow the business presence in Durham.
The buildings will constitute of a portal frame, steel columns and rafters which will be fabricated by SCH. SCH will be ready to move off site by the end of July.
This marks yet another build within meters of Durham City Centre, in addition to Durham Bus Station and "Plot C" at Aykley heads. SCH is ruling Durham City!
North Shields Interchange

SCH are fabricating column and beam steelwork for a two-storey building in North Shields fitted with a glulam timber roof for Willmott Dixon. With an aim of being more sustainable in the industry, timber rooves are becoming increasingly popular within the steel industry. Timber rooves are hard-wearing and versatile, meaning they are fitting for unique builds.
Glulam timber beams are around 20% stronger than normal timber to provide longstanding durability within the structure. They have proved to be a great option for not only sustainability but the longevity of the structure.
SCH has been working with timber for a number of years, adapting to the advances of the current climate. For North Sheilds Interchange, SCH will construct a glulam timber roof onto a steel structure further demonstrating their unique capabilities for constructing with both timber and steel.
SCH is hoping to be finished on-site by the end of 2022, the new building will highly improve the level of transport in and out of North Sheilds. Another of SCH builds which is helping a local community to thrive.
Stephenson Building - Newcastle
Picture from Newcastle University
The original Stephenson building was the heart of engineering in Newcastle, helping to train the engineers who rebuilt post-war Britain. The new building will not only be a homage to those who designed the modern world but will train the new generation of engineers.
SCH are creating a new build, coming in at 788 tonnes, which is engineer led and will improve the level of education Newcastle University will be able to offer. The project will consist of a column and beam five-story building, again fitted with a glulam timber roof with CLT (cross-laminated timber) panels. With the aim of keeping the Stephenson building thriving for years to come, the timber roof is a great option to allow sustainable construction.
The team of 25 have been challenged by working in such close proximity to major roads through Newcastle and the general public, however, SCH thrives in tricky situations with their combined skillsets. The team will wrap up on-site in July.
Although only 3 SCH projects have been mentioned here, their bays continue to be full of activity.
We will keep you updated with completed projects here on our ‘News’ and across our social platforms.
