A bespoke and articulate project, this was not the easiest. The steel work was erected inside of an existing 600 year old castle in Sunderland which had stood vacant for decades. The building had been vandalised and abused for years. Surveyed by historians prior to any restoration work. There was a 3 month survey carried out by historians prior to the restoration work. Within the guidance from the survey there were stipulations that all the walls of the castle were not to be compromised. This meant that no trades could further damage the structure when delivering the new visitors centre that was being installed within the castle. SCH had to erect the steel work with perfection and ensure that the structure was not damaged in any way. The stand alone steel work was erected floor by floor over a period of time which is still on show throughout the castle for the visitors to see.
