SCH Site Services is proud to announce the completion of our latest project at Woodlands Academy in Scarborough, working in collaboration with Galliford Try Construction.
This brand-new Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) school has been built from the ground up, offering modern, purpose-built facilities to support students and staff in an enriched learning environment.
Our team was responsible for the structural steelwork and fire protection, ensuring that the school’s framework is both robust and compliant with the highest safety standards. This project involved the fabrication and installation of 150 tonnes of structural steel, forming the L-shaped, two-story building that now stands as a key educational facility in the region.
A Focus on Fire Protection & Compliance
One of the most critical aspects of this build was the application of 60-minute fire protection, making this our largest fire protection project to date. We worked with Sherwin-Williams, the manufacturer of FIRETEX FX6002, to determine the correct thickness required for the fire-resistant coating.
In preparation for using this advanced fire protection system, our management team underwent specialist training with Sherwin-Williams to fully understand the application process. This three-coat system—consisting of a primer, intumescent fire protection layer, and top-seal coat—was applied meticulously in-house at SCH before the steelwork made its journey to Scarborough.

Quality & Expertise Every Step of the Way
The entire fabrication, painting, and fireproofing process was carried out at our facility, ensuring complete control over quality and compliance. Every stage of fire protection was thoroughly documented and inspected by our team, guaranteeing that all structural steel met strict regulatory requirements before installation.
This approach not only ensured the safety of the new school building but also demonstrated SCH Site Services’ expertise in handling complex fire protection requirements, reinforcing our position as a leader in steel fabrication and fireproofing solutions.

Building for Education
The completion of Woodlands Academy is another milestone for SCH Site Services in delivering high-quality steelwork for the Department for Education. This project reflects our ability to execute large-scale, high-specification builds, integrating both structural integrity and essential fire protection measures.
With the existing school remaining operational during construction, our team worked efficiently to deliver this new, energy-efficient facility, built with sustainability in mind. The finished structure is not just a school—it’s a space designed to support its students for years to come.
SCH Site Services is proud to have been part of this transformational project, ensuring that Woodlands Academy is built to last, providing a safe and inspiring environment for future generations.
