The Tyne Tunnel is a key piece of infrastructure in the North East, consisting of two vehicular tunnels running beneath the River Tyne. Carrying the A19 between Jarrow and North Shields, it plays a vital role in regional transport, used daily by thousands of commuters and commercial vehicles.

Originally opened in 1967, the northbound tunnel has stood the test of time, but like all major infrastructure, it requires regular improvements to meet evolving safety standards. One of the most important recent upgrades has focused on fire resistance, ensuring that in the unlikely event of a fire, the tunnel’s structure can withstand extreme conditions and protect those within it.

SCH Site Services was proud to be appointed by MGL Group to support this critical refurbishment project.

Our Role

We were responsible for supplying and installing the steel trusses which will be used to improve and upgrade the structural safety of the tunnel. These trusses are designed to help compartmentalise potential fires, slowing their spread and providing extra time for emergency responses.

The scope of work involved

· Aid in the design process of the trusses to improve ease of installation

· Fabricating, painting and installing new steel trusses.

· Working to carefully planned operations to minimise disruption to traffic.

Timing & Execution

Given the tunnel's strategic importance, careful consideration was given to scheduling. To avoid disrupting weekday traffic, our teams worked exclusively Friday to Sunday over the course of 9 months.

Despite the time constraints and challenging environment, SCH Site Services completed the work safely, efficiently, and on schedule, with the final four trusses successfully installed during the last weekend of the project.

Refurbishing infrastructure like the Tyne Tunnel isn’t just about installing steel. It’s about planning with precision, executing safely, delivering a quality product and collaborating clearly every step of the way. This project demanded all of that, and we’re incredibly proud of the team who made it happen.
